Illegally slaughtered beef seized at Ranipool

GANGTOK, 30 June [IPR]: A vehicle [bearing registration number SK-03-3700] was intercepted at Ranipool Bazar on 28 June at 5.10 a.m. transporting illegally slaughtered beef. This action was carried out under the supervision of Deputy Director (Marketing & Quality Control), Department of Animal Husbandry, Livestock, Fisheries & Veterinary Services, Dr Madan KS Shanker.
The confiscated beef weighing approximately 500 kg was auctioned and the revenue generated has been credited to the Government account.
A complaint on the matter has been lodged at the Ranipool Police Station to register a case under the provisions of Sub Section 1 of Section 12 of The Sikkim Livestock and Livestock Product Control Act 1985.

A similar confiscation was effected earlier on 30 May, by the officer and Dy. Director (L.S., Check Post, Rangpo), Dr GS Sharma, where one Prem Tamang, a resident of Rangpo Bazar, was apprehended for illegal slaughter of four bullocks at Housing Colony, Rangpo Bazar, East Sikkim. The confiscated beef was also auctioned and a complaint was lodged at Rangpo Police Station under the provision of the Act.
The Department vide its Notification [number 545/AHLF &VS] has already notified all the butchers/ meat vendors supplying meat to Rangpo, Singtam, Ranipool and Gangtok to slaughter the livestock at the Majhitar abattoir. However, illegal slaughter of livestock was still being carried out.
Further, it is also informed that retailers selling meat of livestock slaughtered in places other than the Government notified slaughter house will be dealt with seriously, as per a press communiqué received from Animal Husbandry Department.
