GANGTOK, 27 June: “Life Does not Rewind”, was the theme for this year’s World Anti-Drug Day celebrations observed across the world yesterday. Recovering Users Network [RUN], Jagriti Rehab Centre, Drishya Rehab Centre and Sikkim Network of Positive People [SNPP+], STNM Hospital Complex organized the day at Titanic Park here with generous support of the Sikkim State AIDS Control Society [SSACS].
According to Gyamtso Tamang, president, RUN, the funds generated from the programme will be used to sponsor at least five under privileged individuals receive treatment at different rehabilitation and detoxification centers.
Rain did not dampen spirits for the 254 participants from all over the State who joined the run for a drug-free state. A dance performance by Gobblins’ Group of Tadong was another highlight of the Day. Further, a play by students from Paljor Namgyal Girls Senior Secondary School drove home the message of the day as well.
The showstopper however was the body building show put up by Suresh Chettri and Pema Bhutia one a former Mr. Sikkim and other the reigning muscleman. A power-lifting bench-press competition was also organized for the audience which 35-year-old, Bishal Pradhan, won by lifting 170 kg, similarly, DB Tamang, 47, won the squat competition after he successfully completed 152 squats.
The Marathon winners were awarded with cash prizes sponsored by Sadar Police Station. Chief guest for the day, Gangtok Mayor, KN Topgay, was accompanied by the SSACS Project Director, Dr. Uttam Pradhan and Deputy Mayor, Shakti Singh Chaudhary. Also present were Dr. Doma Bhutia, Legal Advisor, RUN, Dr. MS Tuli, SP East and GMC Councilors.
RUN members have also thanked the IEC Department, Sikkim Police, Rasoi Restaurant, Agarwal Fast Food, Vision Enterprises, Northern Automobile Service car-wash and care, Turtle, Golden Heights, Bhansari Lodge, Allens Kitchen, Krishna Medical Store, Raja Akthar and Eureka Forbes for their support along with Nayuma, NOW, Sikkim Express, Radio Misty- 95FM and Hamro Prajashakti for their support to the cause.
