“When we started Sikkim University on 02 July, 2007, we had just nine admission centres in India, but as of today, we have 29 centres in India and 5 in the neighbouring countries,” said Professor Mahendra P Lama, Vice Chancellor, Sikkim University.
“We have revamped and restructured the Under Graduate courses, made it mandatory to have at least 75% attendance in each semester, along with marks given on your attendance, introduced semesters and new courses and give out results to students within 20 days of the examinations,” Professor Lama stated. At the University, while there were only four courses being offered to students in the beginning, today one can choose from over 25 courses.
He also informed that Sikkim University now has permission to conduct NET/ SLET exams and six students have passed NET from Sikkim University, which is a new record for the State.
While more than Rs. 3 crore had been spent to set up the Central Library, which boasts of being the best in Sikkim with over 19,500 books, a sum of Rs. 20 crores is being invested to bring the best lab facilities in Sikkim by building modern laboratories at Sikkim University, he further informed.
“Sikkim University offers the best of the best to the children, but we are lagging behind on infrastructure issues, this too because we have not been given the land by the State Government to build the University campus at Yangang in South Sikkim,” he informed.
About the land issue, he informed that while the State Government, through four letters in April, 2010, had informed that the land for the University “was ready”, when and SU team visited enquired on the status, it was found that the land owners had still not vacated the land. The area earmarked for the University campus has still not be handed over to the University, and this delay, the VC highlighted, could also affect the funds received for development of the campus.
“We have been assured an amount of Rs. 220 crores from the Centre [UGC] for the construction of the University campus. This had been promised to us under the 11th Five Year Plan and may not be carried over to the 12th Five Year Plan and lapse due to non availability of land,” he explained.
During the Q&A session, when asked about the affiliation of the Government Degree College opened recently at Kyongsa, Gyalshing, affiliated to Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University, he stated that no college in the state was allowed to be affiliated with any other university apart from the Sikkim University. This, as per the Act of Parliament setting up the Sikkim University in 2007. The Act states that all colleges in Sikkim automatically come under Sikkim University, he added.
On the reason why SU did not grant affiliation to the college, he said that the authorities had applied for affiliation and had been provided the details on the norms to be fulfilled for affiliation. He said that the UGC norms cannot be violated and all norms have to be fulfilled.
