SINGTAM, 02 May: Singtam Baikunth Sewa Samiti has developed
a new crematorium at the Teesta river bank. The construction was funded by
NHPC. In order to prevent anti-social elements from loitering in the area, the
Samiti has decided to put bars around the crematorium. The president of the
samiti, Sundar Rai has thanked NHPC and Kumar Agarwal for their contribution in
building the new crematorium. The samiti has appointed a watchman for the
crematorium and plans to plant trees, flowers and maintain cleanliness in the
area. There are also plans of building toilets and provide drinking water as
well as benches. Sudden release of water from the Stage-V reservoir upstream by
the NHPC had created a nuisance for the area, washing away a dead body from the
pyre in a recent past, it may be recalled. [from NANDU DUTRAJ]
