GANGTOK, 27 Aug: As directed by Forest Minister, a preliminary meeting to set up a system for solid waste management was held in the office of the District Collector, North on Tuesday. Representatives from Forest Department, Mangan Nagar Panchayat and UD&HD were present in meeting.
A press release informs that during the meeting different aspects on setting up of a system of solid waste management and integration of same with segregation of waste at source and converting green waste to organic manure duly involving the local communities were discussed. The system is proposed to be set up near Mangan jointly by Mangan Nagar Panchayat, Forest Department and NHPC through District Collectorate, North with an objective to make Mangan Bazar and nearby places/villages garbage free.
The project would look into collection, segregation and treatment of garbage. The garbage would be converted into organic manure and revenue would be generated by selling the same in the market.
It may be pertinent to mention that during the year 2013 NHPC had agreed and assured area MLA, Tshering Wangdi Lepcha of funding a project for garbage management at Mangan. After the meeting the team also inspected the Organic Waste Converting Shed presently being managed by Mangan Nagar Panchayat at a small scale. The plant is not able to cater to the growing need of Mangan bazaar and surrounding areas hence the large scale garbage treatment plant is the need-of-the-hour.
Next co-ordination meeting is scheduled to be held on 30 August at DAC, Mangan with PCCF-cum-Principal Secretary, Forest, and other officials from the Forest Department, Pollution Control Board, NHPC and District Administration, North District for swift initiation of the project.
