PANCHAYATS ASKED TO REPORT ON TREES POSING DANGER
NAMCHI, 27 Aug: Several roads in South Sikkim have been blocked due to damages caused by heavy rainfall.
Following the death of a person after a tree fell on his house at Nandugaon on Tuesday, Panchayat members of South district have been asked to report old and vulnerable trees that may pose a threat to human lives and properties in their respective areas.
11 KV transmission line has been damaged at Jorethang road, one and a half km from Namchi Bazaar. This has affected power supply to Kitam Mickhola, Chardaam, Purano Namchi, Assangthang, Dong Denchung and Dorop Salghari. Restoration will be initiated after detailed assessment of the damages by the Power Department.
As per DAC Namchi, Lingmoo to Yangang road is blocked at Mangzing since 23 August while the road from Hingdam to Legship is blocked near Nardang. The Mamley – Pabong – Ben route is blocked at Kaluja and Sipsu. Road from Phongla to Bermiok is blocked at Bedhghari while Singtam to Bermiok road is blocked at Towkeybirr and Namphing where the road formation has been washed out. Restoration work has been initiated and is expected to be completed within a week. Namthang to Mamrang road is blocked at Narakjhora while Namchi to Wok road is blocked at Pabong 10th Km.
Melli-Nayabazaar, Nayabazaar to Namchi, Melli to Turuk, Melli to Sadam, Melli to Bhanjyang, Melli to Phong roads are blocked due to major and minor slips, falling of boulders and uprooting of trees at many places. The concerned Department has engaged man and machinery to clear and restore these roads.
Majhitar JHS’s Assembly ground has been damaged and the entrance road of Majhitar has been blocked, as informed by Headmaster Majhitar. Namchi to Jorethang road has been blocked due to heavy landslide near 12th mile (one and half km from Namchi bazaar).
