SPSC RIGHT ON LAST KING OF SIKKIM QUESTION

Letter:
In connection to the letter to the editor by Chewang Pintso of Gangtok published on 5 November, and the person to whom he supported with his views in the letter, I would like to express my views, as that the word “King” in place of “Chogyal” is more suitable and honorable in the present context.
“King” is universally accepted and understood by all. Chogyal is local term to address the King. Late P.T. Namgyal is the last reigning King over his subjects till Sikkim became the 22nd state of India.
There is no doubt that the Sikkimese people/ his subjects used to address him as Miwang Chogyal P.T. Namgyal, but as time has changed, he should have been addressed as Miwang Gyalpo P.T Namgyal. No one in the higher elite classes of Sikkimese society has ever proposed of addressing him as the “Gyalpo” or the “King” which was a mistake of the Sikkimese society as a whole.
Literal meaning of Chogyal is Dharmaraja, who was supposed to preach and propagate religious laws and dharma precepts, which he never did since he was a king. In fact the term “Chogyal” was named by the three lamas at Yoksum and the same title continued till the end of the dynasty.
In view of the facts stated above, I don’t find any mistake in addressing “Chogyal” as a “King” by S.P.S.C. It will not be wise to comment by one or two persons of one community only as beloved Chogyal was for all Sikkim Subject holders of all communities who also possessed the same sentiments.
Rigzin, Gangtok [recvd on email]
