NABARD reviews SHG progress in Rongli

GANGTOK, 22 Nov: A meeting of the Project Implementation & Monitoring Committee (PIMC) of the Self Help Promoting Institution Project (SHPi) sanctioned to the NGO, Youth Development Society of Sikkim (YODESS) was held in its office at Rongli, East Sikkim, informs a press release.
The meeting was attended by Assistant General Manager, NABARD, Gangtok, Mahesh Goyal , Central Bank of India and SISCO Bank officials, Secretary, YODESS and members of several SHGs promoted by the NGO under SHPi project sanctioned to the agency by NABARD.
On reviewing the progress of the project after interacting with the SHG members, the NABARD AGM expressed satisfaction on the quality of SHGs promoted by the agency. However, he expressed concerns over the slow progress in Credit Linkage with bank loans for SHGs, without which, the sustainability of the SHGs may not be possible, as taking up income generation is a pre-requisite for sustainability of any programme, the release informs.
On interacting with the SHG members it was felt that the SHG model had not only socially empowered the women members but was also giving them a vision for economic empowerment as one of the SHGs - Himali SHG of Rhenock Rungdung- had taken up production of “Bhumi” Brand Spices with beautiful packaging which was selling very well in the local market and the SHG is now willing to increase its production by availing loan from SISCO bank.
YODESS was playing a good role of “hand holding” the SHGs to make them sustainable, the release endorses.
Speaking on the occasion, the SISCO bank officials expressed satisfaction on the working of the NGO and assured to finance all the SHGs promoted by this agency as their recovery was good.
Later in the day, Guras Farmers club, Dalapchand and Kosis Farmers Club Sudunglakha promoted by YODESS were also launched at Rongli and a Base Level Orientation Training Programme (BLOTP) for these newly formed clubs was conducted to apprise them of their role and functions so that they may be actively involved in the development of the area, the release mentions.
