Plantation to replace fallen plum tree at Raj Bhavan
GANGTOK, JULY 10: Sending the strong message of the importance of planting trees the Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh today planted a plum tree in the Raj Bhawan premises in place of an older tree of the same species which had fallen on 30 June earlier this year.
This is in keeping with the tradition of maintaining the continuity with the Raj Bhawan heritage, informs an official press note from Raj Bhawan.
The Governor, while interacting with media persons, said that the older plum tree was unable to hold its weight and that this was further aggravated by the heavy downpour and the prevailing wet condition of the soil.
The tree was about 15 feet in height and had a girth of 25 inches.
“Much effort had been made to save the tree by providing bamboo stilts to support and prevent it from falling over but no avail, infact the plum tree was a living part of grandeur biodiversity of Raj Bhawan for over thirty years,” the Governor shared.
This plum tree had been planted by BB Lall, the first Governor of Sikkim. Another bent plum of the same vintage stands next to the planted saplings.
