PAKYONG, 12 July: Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for Empowerment of Adolescent Girls (RGSEAG) or SABLA was launched at a function here at Pakyong New Market ICDS Centre, Social Justice Empowerment & Weldare Department, Women & Child Development Division.
The scheme will be run using the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme (ICDS) platform in North and East Districts of the state.
Chief guest on the occasion, Zilla Panchayat of Karthok-Namcheybong TC, Nimchuki Sherpa, in her address, urged adolescent girls to come forward and attend programmes and be aware of the opportunities provided by the State Government.
Principal Pushpanjali Secondary School Pakyong, asked parents not to impose their decisions on their wards and to give girls a chance to pursue the courses in which they have interest. The parents should counsel their child about what is wrong and what is good, he further suggested.
Health Educator, Pakyong PHC, spoke on ‘Adolescence’ - meaning and importance of the phase. He discussed peer pressure, adolescent reproductive and sexual health, modern day problems faced during adolescence like depression and suicidal tendencies, HIV, teenage pregnancy in detail.
CDPO/Pakyong, Y Pradhan, highlighted on the aims and objectives of the scheme. The scheme aims at covering all adolescent girls in the age group of 11-18 yrs in all ICDS projects in North and East Districts.
Under the scheme, the task of self-development and empowerment of adolescent girls, improving their health and nutritional status, spread awareness about health , hygiene, nutrition ,adolescent reproductive and sexual health, family and child care, guide them about basic public services, such as PHC, CHC, Post office, Banks, Police station would be taken up.
The scheme has two major components: Nutrition and Non-Nutrition Component.
1 The nutrition component is for all ''Out of School Girls'' in the age group of 11-14 yrs and ''all girls'' in the age group of 14-18 yrs.
2 The Non nutrition component is for all ''out of school girls in the age group of 11-18 yrs.
The services provided are: Nutrition Provision, IFA Supplementation, Health check-up and referral services, NHED, Counselling, guidance on family welfare, ARSH, life skill education and accessing public services.
Besides some effort will also be made to bring back the ''out of school girls'' under the ambit of formal and non-formal education, she added.
A nutritional rice flakes mix was distributed to all adolescent girls present in the programme and will also be supplied to all beneficiaries henceforth.
A total of 50 adolescent girls and 30 mothers and guardians along with ASHA, members of Self-help groups, NGOs ,ICDS Supervisors, AWWs and AWHs attended the programme.
