GANGTOK, 10 July: CC Sangderpa, one of the affected people in land acquisition for Sikkim University in Yangyang, alleged today that the state government has failed in providing rehabilitation to rendered landless by the project.
She alleged that many of the affected families are now landless have not received the rehabilitation of half acre of land as per the agreement. She further alleged that there was partiality in the rates offered to the affected people for the land acquisition.
Ms Sangderpa alleged that while some were provided the rate of Rs 23 per sq feet, other favoured by the state government were provided with much higher rates.
“When these landless people went to other people to buy land, they were asked to pay around Rs 5 lakhs 30X40 feet plot. They did not receive this much of money,” she alleged.
She mentioned that the people have given their land to the Sikkim University for the bright future of the coming generation but now they are facing problems themselves and even after several visits to SDM [Ravangla] regarding a good price for their lands, no response has been received.
Ms Sangderpa demanded that the government provide proper rehabilitation to the landless people or provide 10 times higher rates so that the people could rehabilitate themselves. She also threatened to approach the courts on behalf of the people if no action is taken by the government.
Ms Shangdarpa was part of the govt when it was decided that SU campus wud come up at Yangang, wasn't she? How come she never thought of all these issues when the Govt was then deciding the rehab package and all that. It just seems like a political opportunity not to be missed for Ms. Shangdarpa!!!!
