Crime Branch destroys seized contraband worth Rs. 90K

GANGTOK, 12 July: The Prosecution Section of the CID Branch of Sikkim Police destroyed contraband substances worth Rs. 90,000 at the District Court premises today.
“The contraband substances, which consist mostly of Spasmo Proxyvon [SP] capsules, Nitrosun-10 [N-10] tablets and Recodex cough syrup bottles had been seized from persons caught by the East District police under the Sikkim Anti-Drug Act [SADA],” informed Court Inspector, PI DM Subba, while speaking to media persons.
“This cache was kept as evidence in a total of 30 SADA cases in which convictions have been won since 2006 and since the cases are over, the drugs were being destroyed,” she said and added that the evidence is kept for a period of three months till after a case is over.
There are seven Police Stations in the East District, and the maximum number of SADA cases come from the Sadar [Gangtok] and Singtam Police Stations, out of the 30 cases, 14 were from Sadar Thana here, 07 from Singtam, 06 from Rangpo and one each from Rhenock, Ranipool and Rongli PS, while there were none from the Pakyong PS.
“This is done to inform the general public about the confiscated drugs by the police, there is no bail in SADA cases, only in exceptional cases and the fine for first time offenders is Rs. 10,000, while the fine for second time offenders goes up to Rs. 40,000. “The last time such contraband substances were burnt was on 25 September, 2010,” she further informed.
