NDRF teams reach Lachung and Chungthang


GANGTOK, 23 Sept: Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force, one each for Chungthang and Lachung, landed at the two North district towns on Thursday.
The team at Lachung, under the command of Deputy Commandant RC Sharma and comprising 45 Indo Tibetan Border Police personnel, landed there this morning in the wake of the flash flood that occurred the night before. The team also has sniffer dogs with it, informed the Deputy Commandant, KR Meena.
The NDRF team was airdropped at Lachung and are equipped with cutting-tools and materials to cut through stones and concrete to rescue if victims are still trapped. It is informed that part of their operation is to recover 4 bodies believed to buried under the debris of a building there. Besides this, the NDRF team there has also taken up relief materials for distribution among those who are still in Lachung. These materials have been handed over to the district officials.
Another team of NDRF landed at Chungthang this morning under the command of Assistant Commandant Gopi Chand. Their task is to assist in the relief operations underway at the Moonlight Public School at Chungthang, informed ITBP officials.
