Flashflood in Lachung; Property damaged, no one injured

GANGTOK, 22 Sept: A flash-flood in a minor stream passing through Lachung, initially denied by district officials but confirmed by ITBP officials and later by the Chief Secretary, occurred at Lachung at 12:15 a.m. on the intervening night of 21 and 22 September. Although property was destroyed when the stream broke its banks, no one was injured in the incident.

The flash-flood, ITBP officials inform, was not all that big or disastrous but did cause some damage to structures in Lachung. A MI [Medical Inspection] room of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police was washed away as were a four houses, some livestock and other materials. However, as mentioned, there was no loss of life.
The MI room of the ITBP contained some communication equipment, furniture and medical supplies, it is learnt. While police and ITBP officials confirmed the flashflood, confusion and suspicion prevailed as the district officials at the control room maintained that they had received no such information even as media reports on the incident had started coming out suggesting that people were stranded. No one, it is confirmed, was stranded by the flashflood.
