Painter’s Camp and Art Appreciation Course begins

Gangtok Mayor, KN Topgay, inaugurates the Painters Camp and Art Appreciation Workshop

GANGTOK, 22 March: A Regional Painter’s Camp-cum-Art Appreciation Course was inaugurated by the Gangtok Mayor, KN Topgay, here at Nepali Sahitya Parishad Bhawanon Tuesday.
The five-day long programme has been organized by the Kolkata Regional Centre of Lalit Kala Akademi in association with Sikkim Akademi, and is scheduled to conclude on 26 March.
A Total of 10 artists from north-eastern states and West Bengal, which includes two participants from Sikkim, are taking part in the regional painter’s camp, while the art teacher from Shanti Niketan, Anshuman Dasgupta, as the main resource person for the art appreciation course.

In his inaugural address, the Mayor has pointed out that the present generation was very fortunate to have such workshops organized in the state and receiving eminent artists from outside the state, which was rare in the past.
He encouraged the students to take full advantage of such opportunities to enhance their artistic skills to become successful artists in the future.
Mr Topgay stressed that there was need of peaceful environment for any artist to do his work, which, according to him, has been provided by the state government abundantly.
He further encouraged the students and the artists to take advantage of the peace in the state to develop and promote their art to higher levels.
In his welcome address, Kolkata Regional Secretary, Siddhartha Ghosh, mentioned that the aim of the programme was to provide exposure and a platform to the artists from the north-eastern states and to take their works to the national levels.
The inaugural session was also addressed by respected artist of Sikkim, Kiran Rasaily, and secretary Sikkim Akademi, Pravin Rai.
Speaking to media persons, president of the Sikkim Akademi, GS Lama, mentioned that the regional artists camp was an annual event to provide exposure to artists from this region and also to inform them about new art forms and other recently developed techniques.
He informed that a total of 10 artists were registered for the camp who will also be provided with two canvases to do their work over the five days, which will be exhibited on the last day of the workshop.
The camp has Buddhi Kumar Subba and Indrakari Subba from Sikkim in the camp,
Anshuman Dasgupta will be making power-point presentations on the present art trend in the regional, national and international levels.
Mr Lama informed that the course is open for all and the Akademi has especially invited students for the course.
He pointed out that such programmes were helpful for the local artists and even the Sikkim Akademi has been organizing annual art exhibitions every year to encourage local artists.
