Community mobilization for quality education at Labdang

A community-mobilization programme under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan was organized at Labdang Junior High School in West Sikkim yesterday for Panchayat members, School Management Committee members, teachers, students and the residents of Kongri-Labdang GPU. More than 200 community members, 150 students and around 11 teachers of Labdang JHS and Kongri Primary School attended the day long programme, informs a press communiqué received from the HRDD Assistant Director, Yuksam BAC, PG Bhutia
The main objective of the community mobilization initiative was to brief the stakeholders on the various policies and programmes of HRD Department and to generate community support and participation to improve the quality of education.

The HRDD Assistant Director briefed the gathering on the right of the child to free and compulsory education and highlighted provisions of the Right to Education Act being implemented in Sikkim since April 2010. The Panchayat members, Teachers and village community were requested to ensure that every child in the 6 to 14 age-group was enrolled in a school even if they were domestic helpers.
He also explained the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) model.
Community members were also informed about the Mid Day Meal Scheme, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyaan (RMSA) and SSA.
The AEO, CT Sherpa, briefed the stakeholders on the “Shakshar Bharat Mission” and  “Total Literary Mission” being launched by the government of Sikkim aiming to provide those [above 18 years of age] without literacy skills with functional literacy and make them literate by 2015.
A cultural programme was also presented on the day students of Kongri PS and Labdang JHS.
Panchayat Secretary, CB Gurung, thanked HRDD for organizing the programme and making community members aware on CCE, RTE, RMSA and Shakshar Bharat Mission. He also requested the parents to take proper care of their children and give them enough time to study at home.
The chief guest for the day, GT Dhungal, Addl. Chief Engineer, Roads & Bridges Department, urged all the students to work hard and aim to become responsible citizens. Pointing out that the State Government has provided many more facilities for facilities, he invited them to grab the opportunities created for them.
He also accepted that the condition of the road leading to these villages needs to be improved and assured that these can be taken care of in the next financial year.
