GANGTOK, 16 Jan [IPR]: According to a report received from Sub Divisional Magistrate, Chungthang Sub Division, North Sikkim, Muguthang village, located under Lachen Dzumsa in the cold desert area of North District, was rendered inaccessible due to heavy snowfall in the second week of January, 2015. Upon being informed by the people of Muguthang [through the land line at the area 13th Battalion Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Post] of four sick civilians who needed immediate evacuation, the Chungthang SDM immediately brought the matter to the notice of District Collector, North.
The district and Sub Division administration at once arranged for essential supplies of food items such as rice, dal, salt, mustard oil, kerosene oil etc. and medicines to be dispatched to the nearest helicopter base at Chaten near Lachen in order to air-drop the relief supplies and conduct medical evacuation. The Muguthang posts of the ITBP and Army furthermore assured to extend all possible help to the local public in the interim till relief supplies reached.
After obtaining necessary clearances from competent authority, four sorties were made on the morning of 16 January, 2015 by two Air Force cheetah helicopters. This led to the evacuation of the four ailing civilians and delivery of food items (weighing about ten quintals) to the remaining people at Muguthang, numbering about fifteen people. The four evacuated civilians, three ladies and one gentleman, were then given necessary medical treatment at Chaten. Their condition seemed much improved after they landed and spent some time at Chaten.
Later in the day, they left for Gangtok, assisted by their relatives from Lachen.
Apart from the armed forces stationed at Muguthang, the place is home to Dokpa [yak herders] families.
