GANGTOK, 05 July: Tamang Youth Society [TYS], a not for profit, non-political and non-governmental youth organization, led by “educated, creative and talented Sikkimese Tamang youth having similar aim and vision towards the Tamang society” is working its way across Sikkim, informs a press release.
TYS works at the grassroots level “believing that change from the bottom-up will bring effective, equitable and sustainable results”, the introductory communiqué adds.
The interim setup of the Society is already in place with the executive committee comprising of 30 board members and 200 members representing the four districts of the State, the release adds.
The Society has been formed to motivate Tamang youth in the field of studies, culture, social services, viable rights, etc., the release explains.
“In most parts of Sikkim, Tamangs are still unaware of many things and personality development is a major area of concern. Bringing awareness among Tamangs in every field can be done only by the society,” says Coordinator (India) Tamang Youth Society, Suresh K. Lama.
The main objectives of Tamang Youth Society of Sikkim are detailed as follows:
1. To get their genuine rights in the state.
2. To share information among members.
3. Organize local / national gathering of young people.
4. Work on specific issues like the environment.
5. Host local workshops for youth.
6. To increase meaningful youth participation at the decision-making level.
7. To make young people responsible towards local, national and international society.
8. To preserve, promote and exchange Tamang culture within Tamangs of Sikkim & outside Sikkim,.
9. To unite the Tamang youth, to encourage them to be actively involved in social and national development.
10. To contribute towards elimination of poverty, illiteracy, ignorance and backwardness prevalent in the Tamang society.
11. To encourage Tamang youth to get involved in issues related to human rights, social justice, peace and reconciliation.
12. Cultural exchange programmes with other communities of Sikkim.
Mr. Lama further adds that the society will soon be registered officially.
