MANGAN, 06 June: On 05 June, World Environment Day was observed at Swayem JHS under the supervision of Mangan Territorial Range, department of Forest.
The programme was attended by RO (T), Dhiraj Khati, BO (T), Tenzing Bhutia and staff, HM, Teachers, students and SMC members. On the occasion, 500 saplings were planted around the school complex and painting competition on environment was also organized for the students. Students who were placed first, second and third were awarded with prizes sponsored by Mangan Territorial Range.
A similar programme was organized by Chungthang sub-divisional office attended by SDM, Chungthang, SDPO, GVA, HEP developers and Forest department officers with plantation of Rhododendron saplings in and around the SDM office complex.
The day was also celebrated by NSS volunteers of Mangan Sr. Sec. school under the guidance of NSS Programme Officer, RP Lepcha and DL Chettri. A plantation drive was conducted where more than 600 saplings of cherry, tuni, pine, etc were planted in the school complex.
A massive awareness rally was conducted from North Sikkim Academy Pentok till the school's junior section. All the students and staff members of the school went around carrying banners and placards shouting environmental protection slogans.
The rally started at 10.30 A.M. from the senior section at Pentok, went round District Administrative Centre, North where a signature campaign was conducted before moving to the town.
Speaking to the media, Vice Principal, Narayan Koirala said that in today's world one of the biggest challenges faced by humanity is environmental degradation and students who are the future can do a lot to bring positive change if proper knowledge is inculcated in them. Before starting the rally students planted saplings of various species around the school complex at Pentok.
