GANGTOK, 09 June: Sikkim Organic Mission [SOM] Principal Executive Director, Khorlo Bhutia has emphasized on the need for service providers in the SOM to work towards changing the attitude of farmers so that they adopt organic farming voluntarily. He stressed that farmers should voluntarily take up organic farming by understanding its importance for the sustainability of the mission.
He was speaking with the service providers in the SOM during a review meeting here at Krishi Bhawan on Saturday. During the meeting, representatives of different service providers updated about their activities and status of their works and also placed their plan of action for this month.
Speaking further in the meeting, Principal Executive Director, Mr Bhutia stated that in the first cabinet meeting of his new government, the Chief Minister has emphasized on organic mission. “This shows that the government is serious about the SOM, so service providers should be serious about the success of the mission as well,” he added. He stated that by 2015 the entire state should be organic but quality is more important, he added.
Mr Bhutia stated that service providers have been doing well but some have still not been performing that well. On the same, he added that the government and the department is very serious about the success of the mission and if any service provider does not perform well then their work could be transferred to the performing service providers.
Mr Bhutia has also directed Additional Directors to make field visits to take spot decisions as per the need of the farmers. He mentioned that all Additional Directors of the department were making field visits at present for strict monitoring of ongoing works.
The meeting was also addressed by SOM Additional Executive Director, Dr Yasoda Pradhan and SOM Joint Director, MK Pradhan.
