GANGTOK, 16 Jan: Surjay Gaon of Lower Syari have emerged as the champions of the Namsoong & Losoong Festival Football Tournament organized by Lower Syari based organization, Ginzing Club, at Ginzing ground in East Sikkim.
In the final match played on 14 January, Surjay Gaon thrashed Ranipool United Boys by 5 goals to 1. A total of 32 teams from in and around Lower Syari participated in the tournament, which was kicked off on 25 December.
The final match was chaired by the Speaker, KT Gyaltsen, who is also the area MLA, as the chief guest and was accompanied by a member of the OBC Board, TB Chettri as the guest of honour, Panchayat president, Pancha Lama, Middle Syari Panchayat, Mohan Tamang and Panchayat of Nandok.
The winning team was awarded the cash prize of Rs 15,000 along with trophy and certificates, while the runners-up received cash prize of Rs 10,000 along with trophy and certificates.
Another attraction of the final day was the girl’s exhibition football match between Ginzing Club and Falcon Youth, Marchak, in which the former team won by 3-2. Likewise, a veteran’s exhibition match was also played in which Middle Syari defeated Lower Syari by 3-2 and for the third place Dhakal Gaon, Lower Syari, thrashed Samdur 4-1.
In his short address, the Speaker appreciated the initiative of the Ginzing Club in engaging youth in the sporting event and providing a platform to talented footballers. He also assured to provide all possible support to the club in organizing this event on a larger scale by adding more attractive features.
Cultural programmes were also presented by the members of Ginzing Club and Samdur. The final day started with the welcome address by Ginzing Club cultural secretary, Pemki Lepcha and concluded with the vote of thanks by Ginzing Club member, Anjana Tamang.
Ginzing Club president, Nima Wangdi Lepcha mentioned that this time the club has organized this festival in a small way by conducting the football tournament but the club has plans to organize it in a grand manner in the future. He further informed that other attractions and activities would be added to the festival next time.
Mr Lepcha expressed his gratitude to the area MLA, Panchayat members, senior citizens, the general public and members of the club for providing support in making the event successful. He also thanked the Energy and Power Department for fully supporting the event.
