GANGTOK, 08 Aug: Bhawani Pradhan was elected president of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s Sikkim-unit following elections held on Sunday.
The election was held under the supervision of the vice-president, Kalyan Dewan and the assistant general secretary, Binay Tamang, of the central committee of the GJM.
The new executive committee has Deependra Dewan, BB Thapa, Dawa Sherpa, Jeewan Thapa as vice-presidents, Sudip Rai as general secretary, Bimal Pradhan, Ajay Megi, Suman Khawas, Umesh Chettri and Kumar Rai as assistant general secretaries, Ujjwal Rai and Satyam Tamang as treasurers and Suraj Rai as publicity secretary.
The committee also has Kuber Chandra Dahal as the chief advisor, while Saran Karki, Kishor Sherpa, Suraj Pradhan were appointed advisors.
In his address, GJM’s vice-president, Mr Dewan insisted that the Gorkhaland Territorial Authority was a ‘temporary arrangement’ and did not compromise the Gorkhaland demand which will continue in the assembly and parliament.
He further mentioned that the GTA will help to build the infrastructure and human resources which will help when “we get statehood”.
“Now the party is taking its demand forward in a democratic way with different diplomatic initiatives and officially and trying to gain national unity and support on Gorkhaland for which our MLAs and MP will speak up in the assembly and the parliament,” he added.
Mr Dewan urged the new office bearers to deliver on their responsibilities and duties with sincerity.
Likewise, GJM’s assistant general secretary, Mr Tamang mentioned that GJM has a clear stand that it will not interfere in Sikkim politics.
On GTA, he mentioned that the GTA is the last base camp to reach the final summit of Gorkhaland.
He further mentioned that creating infrastructure under GTA, will also create opportunities for the people of Sikkim since it would require manpower from Sikkim in the formation of the GTA.
“We are indebted for the support from Sikkim and the state government and especially the Chief Minister who passed a resolution for Gorkhaland in the Assembly,” Mr Tamang said.
He also appealed the CM to extend his experienced counsel on the formation of the GTA.
