Rs 1.26 crore pig-breeding farm inaugurated at Pastanga

GANGTOK, 26 July:  A pig-breeding farm of the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Department was inaugurated by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling at Pastanga in Assam Lingzey under Namcheybong constituency today.
The farm, with the capacity to hold 55 adult “parent stock” of Large White Yorkshire breed, was set up at a total cost of Rs 1.26 crore under the Rastriya Krishi Vikash Yojana [RKVY]. Work on it began on 24 December 2009 and was completed on 23 June earlier this year.

The farm is project to produce around 800 piglets every year.
This facility will now be the “nucleus farm” for production of piglets, gilts and young boars to ensure availability of high quality breeding stock. The farm also targets to meet the increasing demand of pork and pork products in local markets and is being presented as supplementing the efforts of the State Government towards ensuring food security and powering poverty alleviation schemes.
The farm will also impart training.
The CM also inaugurated the Veterinary Sub-Centre at Rizey, Namok under Shyari constituency today. This centre will service Namok, Rizey, Naitam, Pabyuk, parts of Bhusuk, Nimthang and surrounding areas.
