MANGAN, 20 JULY: After receiving the State Green School Award 2011 on World Environment Day, 05 June, at Chintan Bhawan, Lower Samdong Secondary School extended its green record status to the national level, collecting the National Green School Award 2011 at a glittering awards ceremony held at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi on 15 July. The school ranked third in the New School Category on the basis of an all-India rating done by the Centre for Science and Environment.
A seven-member squad comprising of Headmaster ML Koirala, teachers ST Lepcha and KB Chettri and class X students Bibek Sharma, Rohan Bhattarai, Sujata Bhattarai and Sangita Khatiwara represented the school at the awards ceremony and received the award from the CSE Director, Dr. Sunita Narain, in the presence of the chief guest for the day, Sheila Dixit, the Chief Minister of Delhi.
The award includes a certificate and Green Leaf Trophy and a cash component.
The award comes in recognition of the resource management activities, especially in the management of water, air, waste, soil and energy involving students and teachers, at the school. The school has planted more than 100 medicinal plants in the school compound and briefed students on the religious and medicinal value of these plants and also constructed a rain water harvesting tank and bio degradable/ non bio degradable garbage pits.
While speaking to NOW!, the headmaster that the school has been inspired by the recent awards and motivated to work even more concertedly towards grooming students with a stronger sense of responsibility towards safe and sustainable environment.
The school has conveyed it deep gratitude towards the area MLA for his support and thanked the Envis Centre of the Forest Department for guidance, supervision and evaluation.
