GANGTOK, 18 July: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Sikkim unit has taken “strong exception over the controversy surrounding the Sikkim Central University land issue”, conveys a BJP press release issued today, demanding that the issue be resolved as soon as possible.
The controversy, the release contends, was “defaming Sikkim and leaving negative impacts on the young minds of the state”.
Condemning the “irresponsible, malicious and slanderous comments” made by people the BJP sees as “uninformed-ineligible sycophants of the SDF party”, the BJP has demanded an apology from the SDF to the people of Sikkim for “misleading them on the Sikkim University issue”, the release adds.
The release also alleges that SDF spokespersons, former MP Bhim Dahal and present Lok Sabha member, PD Rai, “have no right to speak on the issue since they have not raised any issue related to the state and its people in the house”.
Now, the BJP has decided to visit the proposed Sikkim University site at Yangang and “understand the ground reality, a detailed report of which will be given to the Centre”, the release further informs.
The party has also submitted a letter to the Chief Secretary seeking a “clarification” from the State government on the matter.
“If the state government can’t even provide land for a central university passed by an Act of the Parliament of India, how can it assure a fully literate state with quality education on one hand and delay the land transfer to hamper the university’s functioning darkening the academic prospects of the future generations on the other?,” the letter states further alleging that the state government’s ‘other vested interests’ as the reason behind the delay in land transfer.
