MANGAN, 13 April: Power Minister, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, who also happens to be the concerned area MLA, visited the Durga Mandir here at Zusing basti in Mangshila yesterday in follow-up to public complaints regarding the damage caused to the temple by the recently constructed PMGSY road there.
The temple is located right below the PMGSY road and has been damaged by debris from the excavation carried out for road construction. The roof and some portion of the structure have been damaged.
Apart from this, the pond in the temple’s backyard has also been intruded by boulders and the road work has also dried up the source of the pond. The pond, the mandir committee’s president, Sahdev Lohagun, informs, has historic and religious significance for the villagers who hold many religious ceremonies on its banks.
He further informed that the temple was constructed by their forefathers through donations raised from all the villagers. It has now been a year since the temple was damaged, but no reprieve has been offered to the villagers despite a written petition submitted to the concerned department.
On his part, the Minister assured the villagers that a new temple will be constructed soon and that he would brief the Chief Minister on the issue. He said that everyone should contribute to the task and highlighted that PMGSY was also part of development.
The Minister was accompanied on his visit by Zilla member Zomin Limboo, Panchayat President Padam Singh Limboo, ward panchayat Kamala Biswarkarma, Mandir Committee members, senior citizens and villagers.
