Awareness sessions promote organic farming in South Sikkim


NAMCHI, 15 Feb: Awareness sessions on the “Organic Horticulture Development Programme” in Sikkim have been underway in different parts of South district since 02 February. Organized by MR Morarka-GDC Rural Research Foundation in Sikkim, the programme is supported by the Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department. On 12 February, awareness on the same was held at Assangthang ward, Daragaon, under Assangthang Gram Panchayat Unit with Rabin Mangar, Panchayat Secretary, as the chief guest.

Resource persons Ajay Chowdhary from Jaipur, and Field Supervisors Jasmati Thapa, Lal Bahadur Rai and Ashok Kumar Mangar imparted training to the farmers, while Tilak Pradhan the Training Project Officer oversaw the training.
The training programme was attended by around 47 farmers from the ward who were trained in organic farming and topics like vermin-compost, herbal spray, soil fertility and other topics discussed.
According to the Training Project Officer, the aim of this series of awareness programmes is to make Sikkim a completely organic state and eradicate the use of chemical fertilizers. The programme is underway in different rural areas of South Sikkim under the guidance and supervision of assigned Training Project Officers.
Similarly, an awareness programme was also conducted at Lalshore ward of Tinik-Chisopani GPU under Poklok-Kamrang constituency on 14 Feb under the chairmanship of Omnath Sanyasi.
