Yuksam School wins national level interschool folk dance competition

GANGTOK, 02 Jan: The Government Secondary School, Yuksam, has made the State proud and delivered the people a welcome advance New Year’s gift by bagging the first place at the recently-held mational-level Inter-School Folk Dance Competition 2011 organized by the Population Education Cell of NCERT [with co-operation from SCERTs of various states]. School troupes from Gujarat and Rajasthan took the 2nd and 3rd positions in the event held on 28 and 29 December.

The Sikkim team was led by Paritosh Pathak of SCERT (HRDD, Gangtok).
The 6-member dance troupe, through their lively costumes and graceful performance, not only rightly communicated the message on various aspects of women’s empowerment, but also won adulation from the judges and fellow participants, informs the Headmaster Sanjoy Acharya in a press communiqué released today.
The students received a certificate, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 1,000 each. Certificates were also awarded to Laxmi Gurung (Lab Assistant) for penning the lyrics of the song and to Nima Lhamu Bhutia (PRT) for vocalization and choreography.
Incidentally, Ms. Bhutia is a CCRT-trained teacher and the first lady from Sikkim to be honoured with a postal stamp by the Royal Govt. of Bhutan for her earlier production, the music album ‘Yuksam Drayang’.
Maita Man Limboo (LDC) of the School was also deputed by the School administration to accompany the 8-membered all-women team.
The journey of the school to the finals has been tough, the Headmaster shares.  The School stood 2nd at the District-level competition held at Soreng and then won the State-level event at Gangtok and then came in second again at the regional-level competition held at Shankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati, earning a berth in the nationals.
The SMDC of the School congratulated the team for their outstanding performance and hoped that hard and sincere work done by remote rural schools shall be acknowledged and appreciated by appropriate authorities. On behalf of the SMDC, the Headmaster thanked Ministers Dawcho Lepcha and NK Pradhan for providing financial assistance towards purchase of costumes and jewelry for the competition. The Headmaster also thanked SCERT (HRDD, GoS) and HRDD (West) officials for “motivating and inspiring the School family to put their best for the national-level event.”
