Residents ‘notice’ gap in Tumin Bridge, BRO checks and assures it is stable

MANGAN, 04 Jan: The collapse of a barely three year old bridge [Rangchang] last month has ensured that people look out for warning signs more closely and seeking technical opinion the moment they suspect that structural strength has been compromised. Such a development visited Tumin under Rakdong-Tintek Block in East Sikkim here today.

The residents of the area noticed that the Tumin Bridge had developed a ‘gap’ they had not seen earlier. The brought this to the notice of the concerned agency, and today, Major R. Sujit of the Border Roads Organisation was at the site as a technical expert accompanied by PI Chundi Chopel of SIngtam Police Station.
After checking the bridge, the BRO Major and other engineers found the bridge stable and reassured the people that there was no need to worry. This bridge has a capacity of 70 tonnes.
This bridge is located between Raley and Tumin on the Singtam-Mangan highway, 2 kms short of the Rangchang Bridge which had collapsed.
