GANGTOK, 03 June: A “Children’s Expression and Discussion Session” under the “Voice of Children” programme was organized yesterday as a part of the week-long celebration of World Environment Day being held at GB Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development in collaboration with ICIMOD, Kathmandu-Nepal, here at its Pangthang campus. The participating schools were Lingdok Senior Secondary School, Penlong Secondary School, West Point SSS, TNSSS, PNGSSS and Deorali Girls SSS.
The programme started with a welcome address by Dr. KK Singh, Scientist In-charge, GBPIHED-SU. The topical address on “Man and Mountain Environment” was delivered by Dr. HK Badola, Senior Scientist, while Dr. BR Acharya, Associate Professor, Sikkim University, spoke to the students on “The Birds and Butterflies of Sikkim”.
Power-Point presentations on the various aspects of environment both, at the local and the global levels, were also made by the participating students.
A thematic painting competition was also organized on two sub-themes of the WED 2011; ‘forest fires’ and ‘Man and the mountain environment’.
Group discussions on various subjects related to the environment saw an active participation of the students, faculty experts, resource persons and the research scholars. The interactive session and the painting competition were jointly conducted by Dr. YK Rai and Shri J. Dhakal from the Sikkim Unit faculty.
The participants were given Certificates of Participation and the prizes awarded to three best paintings. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by LK Rai.
