GANGTOK: “Hope its not gonna be cramped up. Why not promote and develop a new area and avoid traffic jams,” expresses a post-it stuck to the exhibit at the ‘Projecting Gangtok’ exhibition on the ‘Fashion Street’ project proposed for Deorali.
Gangtokians, offered a platform to voice their opinion on infrastructural projects lined up for the capital town, are expressing themselves with welcome gusto. This exhibits of proposed infrastructure projects are now framed by pieces of coloured paper with comments both positive and negative. The exhibition, “Projecting Gangtok”, underway at the Star cinema hall has the “Architects of Sikkim” as curators and showcases, in extensive detail, the various works in progress around town.
A sizeable number of youngsters can be seen at the venue and as Architects of Sikkim member Parayan Dixit informs, “They are the ones who are freely expressing themselves while the older lot seem to be somewhat reluctant”.
Around 300 questionnaires have already been distributed but only a few submitted back so far, informed an AS member. The questionnaire is a lengthy one, posing 6 questions and seeking feedback on the 12 projects on display; it is thus obvious that the post-its have become the most preferred mode of expression.
The Gangtok Tower project has gathered quite a lot of flak from visitors, even as some others received the thumbs up, as one on the State Museum reads, “We really need one, would be cool to see it soon”.
What this proves is that, if given a chance, Gangtokians can and will engage. Compilation of the feedback received has begun and will be placed before the authorities once the exhibition concludes. It will then be up to the authorities to either take notice or ignore the feedback. As for AS, they have delivered on what they set out to do- inform Gangtokians on projects being funded for their use and opening a space for the residents to inform themselves and share their views.
