Perbing-Khop updated on CCE, RTE and school dropouts

NAMCHI, 25 Feb: An awareness programme on Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE), Right to Education (RTE) and School Dropouts, organized by the Human Resource Development Department [South], Namthang Block Administrative Centre was held at Perbing Khop Primary School, South Sikkim yesterday.
Perbing Khop is a rural area with a predominantly Sherpa population who are mostly farmers where a lack of awareness on the importance of education and many other issues created a need for this programme, it is informed.

The programme was initiated by AEO/ HRDD (Namthang BAC) Radhika Rai who felt the need for such a programme from an earlier visit she had made to the area. According to observations made in her first visit, she noticed that many girl students were married off early and forced to discontinue their education while a lot of boys were made to join monastic schools by the parents.
Resource persons from various fields were invited for the programme amongst whom were Public Health Nodal Officer (PHNO) from Namchi Hospital, Court Inspector and Advocate from Namchi District Court, Headmaster Perbing Secondary School, AEO HRDD (Namthang BAC), Panchayat Secretary, along with the headmaster of host school Perbing Khop Primary School, teachers, students and guardians.
The programme, which had Zilla Panchayat member Purna Kumari Gurung as chief guest began with an address by Headmaster, Perbing Khop Primary School, TT Sherpa who briefed the gathering on the background of the school and highlighted on the present condition of the school. This was followed by legal counseling by Advocate Yanzee Pinasha who spoke on legal literacy and awareness campaign on MG NREGS under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005.
Health counseling was given by Public Health Nodal Officer who talked about various health issues, health related disadvantages of early marriage and also informed
about the proper diet required for women and adolescent girls. The Court Inspector gave counseling on law and imparted necessary information on MG NREGS.
Headmaster, Perbing Secondary School, Suraj Rai spoke on CCE, stressing on the need for education adding that the real objective of CCE is provision of quality education not
only in Sikkim but all over the country. AEO Radhika Rai addressed the programme on RTE citing examples of the importance of education, further mentioning that free education is provided till class VIII by the government. She also addressed issues like dropouts, the reasons behind it and explained the role of different
bodies like guardians, teachers, neighbors and other government agencies.
The programme concluded with a feedback from Panchayat Secretary, Hari Gurung
on behalf of the villagers and local people who thanked the resource persons for sharing
knowledge on various topics.
