GANGTOK, 25 June: In what can be seen as a symbolic stepping out, disgruntled SDF MLA from Upper Burtuk, PS Tamang, today stepped into the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, making his first appearance in the House for legislative business since he was elected in the 2009 Assembly elections.
What is more, Mr. Tamang arrived in the Assembly nearly an hour and a half ahead of the scheduled start of the Budget Session, taking his seat behind the Public Accounts Committee chairperson in the Treasury Bench at 9:40 a.m. The Budget Session began, as scheduled, at 11 a.m.
He also made a public display of his opposition today. When the House rose to receive the Leader of the House, the Chief Minister, on his return after seeing off the Governor [after he had presented his address], Mr. Tamang remained seated.
After the Governor’s address, when the Assembly adjourned for tea, Mr. Tamang left, not attending the remaining session which included the Chief Minister moving the motion of thanks on the Governor’s address and the tabling of two Bills.
When media-persons approached Mr. Tamang enquiring about his plans, Mr. Tamang, who has not issued any public statements on this matter yet, said, “Wait for another day”.
It may also be mentioned here that while Mr. Tamang had been issued only two visitor passes for his supporters to sit in the visitors’ gallery today, he had turned up with many more and eventually, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, DN Thakarpa, allowed relaxations for them to be accommodated in the gallery as well.
