GANGTOK, 31 May: Sikkim has a strong representation in the 16-member team selected to represent India at the 21st Arsenal International Soccer Festival scheduled to be held in London in July 2011. Three boys, two from Namchi Senior Secondary School and one from Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School [Gangtok], have been selected in the final team after a gruelling one-month long coaching camp held in Kolkata under coaches from Arsenal FC.
Sikkim Football Association, it may be recalled, in collaboration with Tata Tea and Arsenal FC, had conducted the U-15 school soccer championship at the Tashi Namgyal Academy ground on 19 and 20 March earlier this year. This was a first time that the Tata Tea-Arsenal FC tournament was held in Sikkim and 32 school teams had participated.
Jamshed Nassiri, former international, was assigned the Head Scout for Gangtok. The short-listed players were undergoing coaching camp at Kolkata for the last one month under the coaches from English football giants Arsenal FC.
The three lads from Sikkim in the final list selected for London are: Tshering Zangpo, Bibek Bhutia and Khusen Mangar. An SFA press release informs that while one boy is from TNSS School, Gangtok, the other two are from Namchi SS School.
The SFA general secretary, Menla Ethenpa, highlights that this is the first time that an event of this nature was held in Sikkim and conveys that the SFA is “extremely happy” with the “good result”. The SFA president, Tempo Bhutia, has congratulated the boys, an SFA press release informs.
