Letter: NHPC clarification

Rs. 75 LAKH FOR STRENGTHENING AND IMPROVING PROTECTION WORK IN VULNERABLE AREAS, NOT FINE FOR ILLEGAL DUMPING, CLARIFIES NHPC

Certain news item has been published in some of the newspapers with Headline “NHPC fined Rs. 75 lakhs for irresponsible dumping of waste” [read NOW! issue dated 28 Feb 2012]. It is clarified that this news item is misleading and misreported. The old dispute between NHPC and the Forest Department regarding treatment of road at Elachi Khola by filling with excavated muck has been amicably settled as out of Court Settlement. NHPC has agreed to pay Rs. 74.5 lakh to Forest Department for strengthening and improving the protection works in the vulnerable areas on recommendation of a committee consisting of officials of NHPC & Forest Department. The Honourable District Court of Sikkim has kindly disposed the case and appreciated the sincere efforts of both the parties in bringing about the conclusion in this long pending dispute.
NHPC, Balutar

  1. So NHPC admits that it was filling excavated muck on the road of Elachi Khola, after doing immense damage to the flora of SIkkIM, They proudly declare that they are paying money for strengthening and improving the protection works in the vulnerable areas that too on the recommendation of a committee. Why could they not do it with out that ....do they not have a Corporate Social Responsibility policy as most orgs have!!!!
