Quarrel between labourers leaves one dead near Thangu

TWO TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON CHARGES OF MURDERGANGTOK, 12 Oct: Two people have been taken into custody on charges of having murdered a person at Samdong under Lachen Police Station on 10 October. The duo, it is informed, were friends with the victim. The accused are in judicial custody at present and have reportedly confessed to the murder.
Speaking to NOW! over the phone today, the Chungthang SDPO, SP Bhutia, informed that the three persons, including the victim, originally hail from Jhapa in Nepal and were working as labourers in Samdong.
“On 10 October, the three - Man Bahadur Bishwakarma, Makkar Singh Basnet and the victim Dak Bahadur Darjee - had gone to up to Thangu which is 6 kilometers from Samdong. Once there, they started to drink and on their way back were completely intoxicated,” the SDPO informs, adding that once back at Samdong, a quarrel broke out over a small loan taken by Dak Bahadur Darjee from Man Bahadur Bishwakarma.
The quarrel turned physical on the road itself, and ended in a death at around 6 p.m. Man Bahadur Bishwakarma and Makkar Singh Basnet are alleged to have picked up a stone from the roadside and struck Dak Bahadur Darjee on the head causing fatal injuries.
While Man Bahadur Bishwakarma was arrested by the police from Samdong yesterday, Makkar Singh Basnet had managed to abscond. A search party was sent to different possible locations and he was picked up by the police search party this evening.
A case under 302/34 [murder] of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the two at the Lachen Police Station.
