Gram Shree Mela turns business of over Rs. 6 lakh


GANGTOK, 02 May: The Gram Shree Mela 2011, organised at the Directorate of Handloom & Handicrafts by the Sikkim Rural Development Agency from 16 to 30 April, recorded a total sale of Rs. 6,22,798, an IPR Press release informs.
The main aim behind organizing the Gram Shree Mela was to provide a marketing platform to the Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) Programme in Sikkim. A total number of 47 SHGs from the four Districts participated in the Mela, the release informs.
Apart from a never-ending stream of visitors and tourists, the exhibition also received the presence of officials of Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, who visited the stalls on 28 April and interacted with SHG representatives. The visiting dignitaries were impressed and appreciated the efforts made by the SHGs and motivated them towards achievement of their goals, the release adds.
The exhibition showcased a wide variety of products ranging from wooden craft work, knitted garments, handloom bags, nylon baskets, cane and bamboo items, drift wood, food items etc.
The Project Director, SRDA, informs that the next Gram Shree Mela is proposed to be held in October, later this year.
