IBM “Systems Centre of Excellence” to come up in Siliguri


SILIGURI, 06 May: Surendra Institute of Engineering and Management (SIEM), Siliguri, announced on Thursday that an IBM Systems Centre of Excellence (SCoE) will be set up at the institute to train students and build “smarter skills on industry leading IBM Systems technologies and platforms”.
“The IBM SCoE, will provide an opportunity for students to learn new skill-sets on the latest technology platforms including AiX and Linux. IBM will also provide the institute with access to technologies relevant to the local market and equip the faculty with knowledge to ensure that students are able to gain first-hand experience on all IBM platforms at the college,” an SIEM press release contends.

As part of the investment, the students will also benefit by working on real life technology problems in a collaborative lab environment, the release adds. SIEM will provide the infrastructure and high-end system while IBM will provide expertise across IBM technologies and platforms.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chairman SIEM, Sharad Agarwal, along with the Director SIEM, Snigdha Agarwal, highlighted that there was a shift in the global economy and the need for IT-related skills was now greater than ever.
They also acknowledged the nature of IT-related jobs in the services economy is evolving as there is an increasing requirement to apply technology, engineering and disciplined thinking and design to the people aspect of businesses.
Principal, SIEM, Prof. (Dr.) Raman Kr. Jha, said, “There is a need for the industry and academia to collaborate to create a multi-cultural ecosystem that stimulates young minds; on one hand acclimatizing them with a culture of innovation and on the other, exposing them to new and emerging technologies. IBM and SIEM together will make a big difference in this region. We have tied up to work together as Industry Academia training partner for a better tomorrow”.
“To fuel innovation, we have to continue to invest in smarter skills to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow,” said Executive IT Consultant, Systems and Technology Group, IBM India/SA, Subram Natarajan. “This collaboration, with SIEM, is in continuation with our focus on working with academia across the country to help combine traditional curriculum with current technical and industry skills that are quit essential to succeed in a Smarter Planet,” he added.
