CLOS blames hydel projects for earthquake devastation

GANGTOK, 24 Sept: Activities like the use of explosives to develop mega power projects in areas like Dzongu, Chungthang and Lachung that weakened the land stability making these areas the worst affected by the recent earthquake, claims a press release issued by Concerned Lepchas of Sikkim [CLOS].
Reiterating their stand against mega power projects in the area, the release ‘entreats’ policymakers to “rethink, reassess and scrap all 14 power projects that are in operation or being proposed in the region, thereby respecting the area as the sacred and protected reserve of the Lepchas”.
CLOS has called upon all Sikkimese to exert pressure on all the concerned authorities to immediately scrap these power projects.
