Christian Burial Ground Committee inspects cemetery, finds encroachments

GANGTOK, 25 Aug: The executive members of Christian Burial Ground Committee, led by their president, Pastor Joseph Tamang, made a spot verification of the Christian Burial Ground at Bagthang, Burtuk here on 22 August.
The team called on the contractor, Rupa Chettri, and showed her the spot where the construction work has to be started. The project has been funded under the MPLAD scheme for Rs. 1,00,000 and includes two units of toilets/ bathrooms, footpath, hydrant, halting shed etc, informs a press release.
The team then made a round of the complex where it encountered encroachments by seven families. The team informed the encroachers that the land has been provided by the State Government to the Christian community for their cemetery and requested them to vacate the area. Some of the encroachers expressed willingness to vacate the plots if they were provided alternate accommodation.
The team informed them about the process of land procurement and suggested that they approach the appropriate forum for a solution.
The team also decided that in the case of those encroachers who were Christians, their respective Church/ Pastor would be approached first to prevail upon them to vacate the land.
The team also realized the need of urgent fencing around the complex to prevent further encroachment, adds the release.
Pastor Tamang was accompanied by CP Dewan, GT Dhungel, MT Sherpa, GB Rai, Pastor Amos Cintury, Ongdup Lepcha, JB Balakoti and Tek Bahadur Chettri.
The committee has also decided to maintain a hearse and a coffin, the release informs.
