Gangtok rally seeks more security for media in Sikkim

GANGTOK, 09 Feb: Members of various social organizations and clubs joined the Peace Rally organized by the Press Club of Sikkim in the capital today to demand security of media persons and complete freedom of the press. The rally also demanded stringent action against those caught in cases of violence against the media in the state. In the most recent case, a vandal had attacked workers in the Sikkim Express printing unit here in Tadong on 28 January.
A PCS press release informs that representatives from more than 50 organizations joined journalists in the rally from Deorali Truck Stand to Paljor Stadium. Participants carrying banners and placards with slogans protesting attacks on press covered the route along NH 31A via Hospital Dara towards Paljor Stadium road.
At the end of the rally, representatives from different participating organizations addressed the gathering and unanimously condemned the attacks on the press and media and expressed their solidarity with the press.
Press Club of Sikkim has thanked the organisations, members of the media fraternity and police personnel for making the rally successful. The Club also resolved to take serious action in case of any acts of violence against the media in future.
