HMI trainee dies at Dzongri base camp

GANGTOK, 29 Sep: In an unfortunate incident, a youth from West Bengal who was part of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute’s (HMI) advanced mountaineering training course being held at the HMI base camp in Dzongri, West Sikkim died due to health related complications here this morning.
SP [West], DB Giri, confirmed the casualty and added that it was premature for the police to make any official statement on the incident as the case had still not been officially reported at the local police station at Yuksom as the area falls under its jurisdiction.
However, as per the SP, preliminary information from the said area suggests that the youth was from West Bengal and was part of the HMI course being held at Dzongri and that the cause of death as telephonically informed was health-related complications.
The SP further informed that the police and HMI staff along with the locals of the area were in the process of bringing down the body from the base camp to Yuksom Bazaar where an official report will be filed at the police station.
The body was expected at Yuksom by 9pm.
