by SAGAR CHHETRI
GANGTOK, 07 May: The Rajya Sainik Board, on behalf of the State Government, has arranged motivation and counseling sessions for students at various schools and colleges to inspire more of them to pursue careers as commissioned officers in the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force. This series will roll out in phases with the first one starting Wednesday at the Sikkim Government College here. A Delhi-based coaching academy, “the Cavalier”, has roped in to carry out the motivation and counseling sessions with students.
The Rajya Sainik Board initiative is in support of the State Government’s efforts to encourage youth, especially students towards elite services, including the armed forces. The State government has already begun sending potential candidates on full scholarship to reputed coaching centres outside the state to prepare for competitive exams and has now taken the initiative to provide coaching to potential local candidates for the defence services.
The counselors will begin the day at SGC-Tadong and move on to Tashi Namgyal Senior Secondary School. On 09 May, similar sessions are scheduled to be held at Tashi Namgyal Academy, Holy Cross School and Sikkim Government College, Kamrang on 10 May and finally at Namchi Senior Secondary School [class X to XII] on 11 May.
Addressing a press conference today, Rajya Sainik Board Secretary, Colonel DN Bhutia informed that an expert team from the Cavalier, led by its Director, will be holding the counseling sessions.
Col. Bhutia informed that he travelled himself to Delhi to screen the coaching centre and finalised the Cavalier for the Sikkim responsibility for its proven track-record. He explained that even Sainik Schools entrusted the coaching to their candidates to this academy, making them well recommended for the task at hand.
He informed that expert team from the Cavalier will also shortlist potential candidates, help them in filling up the required UPSC forms for NDA and Combined Defence Services and then recommending the names to the State government to sponsor their coaching.
It is informed that the necessary arrangements for the coaching classes in Delhi, including accommodation and meals, will be made by the state government.
Col Bhutia mentioned that in order to ensure increased presence of Sikkimese youth in the Armed Forces as commissioned officers, the Chief Minister has declared that all eligible students aspiring to join NDA Pune, OTA Chennai or IMA Dehradun or equivalent academies of IAF and Navy will be provided with the required coaching and financial assistance to prepare them for UPSC selection examinations.
He further informed that expect for the National Defence Academy, all other entries are open for both boys and girls. He pointed out that hardly any students from Sikkim make it to NDA , hence the initiative from the State government to provide a suitable platform and financial incentive is praiseworthy and deserves full appreciation.
“It was a big opportunity for the potential candidates provided by the government at their doorsteps and they just need to tap this opportunity to go ahead,” he adds.
