KVK works towards rejuvenating ‘Lum ko Suntala’

GANGTOK, 29 Oct: While most of the people were busy making gala during the Puja holidays, officials of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Sikkim who were camped at Lum village of Lower Dzongu from 18 October were busy facilitating the Orange growers of the village to regain the lost fame of once famous “Lum Ko Suntala”.
A press release informs that during their stay in the village, the officials made field visits of almost all the orchards and demonstrated the technique of ‘Inarching’ to rejuvenate the old and sick trees. For the next four days, the officials supervised the farmers in carrying out Inarching of old and sick trees of their respective orchards and imparted on-field training on the importance of Field sanitation by collection and dumping the infested fallen fruits in organically treated plastic drums for effective management of Fruit Drops in Citrus.
Apart from Citrus, training on Integrated Disease Management of Ginger was also delivered. The KVK sojourn to the beautiful hamlet was made memorable through the co-operation rendered by the members of LOGA (Lum Orange Growers Association) headed by its president Tshering Gyatso Lepcha, the release states.
The programme was sponsored by National Horticulture Board.
