GANGTOK, 14 Sept: Chief Secretary Karma Gyatso launched the online Electoral Roll Management System here at Gangtok today at a special function held in the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. The online ERMS is introduced as a user-friendly system which will be great convenience to voters.
As the Chief Secretary highlighted in his address at the launch function, the Electoral Roll Management System introduced by the Election Commission of India makes it possible for voters to file their applications for inclusion, transfer, deletion and correction of their names online.
The CS also launched a toll-free telephone number – 1950 – to handle enquiries on voter list related enquiries.
He welcomed the adoption of facilities created by advancements in technology to ease official processes for citizens and commended the ERMS as a milestone achieved by the Election Commission of India
Meanwhile, the Chief Electoral Officer, KT Chengapa, stressed that the Electoral Roll Management System makes it possible for voters to register online and was a service originally planned in Sikkim in the year 2010-11.
However, in the process of developing its own software, the Election Department realized that it was technically not viable to adopt all the requirements of Election Commission of India’s guidelines. Although the National Information Centre authority in the State tried its best, it could not deliver which is when the State approached ECI to use their software.
The Election department has completed all Electoral Roll Management System and even the Election Commission Grievances Redress and Complaints System has been integrated into it. Besides this, status application tracking system has been provided in the website and will be made functional to the voters during the Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls.
CP Dhakal, Additional Electoral Officer, in turn informed that the new summary of revision will begin from 01 October onwards for fresh inclusion, transfer, correction and deletions from the voter list.
