SKM accuses CM’s son of distributing money, son counters with police complaint of attempted assault
GANGTOK, 06 Apr: Pakyong was the epicenter of high drama which unfolded on the night of 05 April with flying squads, sector magistrates and SKM vehicles whizzing around as allegations flew thick and fast of alleged distribution of money. In the eye of this storm was Bijay Chamling, son of the Chief Minister, who was accused by SKM party workers of distributing money to some people of Rorathang during the night. He meanwhile has also approached the police with a complaint of suspected SKM supporters trying to attack him while he was travelling in the area. All of this, at around midnight, Saturday.
A complaint in this regard was registered with the Pakyong police by SKM supporter, Kamal Adhikari. Later, 6 persons from Rorathang turned up at the police station claiming to have received money that night. As per their statements they had received money from an SDF supporter Sunita Tamang.
Allegations of distribution of money were not the end of the night as the SKM supporters reportedly chased the vehicle of Bijay Chamling on suspicion of distributing money. Mr. Chamling, it is informed, drove to the Pakyong police station and lodged a complaint against the intimidation targeted at him by SKM party workers.
Both sides lodged their respective complaints.
While the SKM complaint has to do with the distribution of money, the complaint by Paljor Tamang, who was accompanying Bijay Chamling, has to do with chasing of their vehicle by SKM supporters including threats and stone pelting.
Returning Officer, East, AK Singh, when contacted, informed that as soon as he received the complaints, at around 11 pm Saturday night, he dispatched a flying squad to the area along with the sector magistrate. As per the complaint, people aboard a vehicle were accused of distributing cash at Rorathang that night. Both, the RO and the SP East, Manoj Tiwari, confirm that the vehicle was thoroughly checked and searched and so was the accused, but no money was found in either the vehicle or on his person.
In fact, as the RO informs, the search was conducted under videography.
As mentioned, later, 6 persons turned up claiming to have received Rs. 2,500 each from one Sunita Tamang of Rorathang. While Mr. Bijay Chamling was not directly implicated, police sources say that it was alleged that she received the money from him for distribution.
The SP informs that their statements have been recorded and investigation on the matter is underway.
The FIR of Kamal Adhikari was registered under sections 175 E and 506 IPC. Police sources inform that these being non cognizable offences the complaints have been forwarded to the competent court which will give its order on the matter.
Similarly, the complaint of Paljor Tamang that they were chased and pelted with stones has also been registered under non cognizable sections and forwarded to the competent court.
As for the matter of the money which turned up in the hands of the 6 people, police inform that the matter is being investigated and the statements of the 6 recorded. The RO East, AK Singh stated that as per ECI guidelines only cash amounts of Rs. 50,000 and above can be seized. However in the course of the action taken searches were conducted and a report has also been filed by the Sector Magistrate. No other money has been found, stated the RO.
While one of the 6 claimed to have video evidence of the money distribution, the same has not been submitted to the police.
