GANGTOK, 22 Aug: Under the Saakshar Bharat Mission Programme in Sikkim, 1,300 non-literate persons will be appearing for the assessment test to be held on 24 August, 2014. The programme was launched in Sikkim on 01 May 2010 to educate 19,377 non-literate persons as per survey done by State literacy Mission Authority (SLMA).
The programme aims to further promote and strengthen Adult Education, specially of women, by extending educational options to those adults who having lost the opportunity of access to formal education and crossed the standard age for receiving such education, now feel a need for learning of any type, including, literacy, basic education (equivalency to formal education), vocational education (skill development), physical and emotional development, practical arts, applied science, sports, and recreation.
In a press release, Joint Director SLMA, Hem Pd Dhakal informs that till date Six assessment tests have been conducted with the help of National Institute of Open schooling (NIOS). Out of 19377 non-literates 16644 learners passed the ‘A’ Level grade assessment test i.e. class III Level.
The programme was launched in two districts of Sikkim i.e. North and West. There are altogether 18 coordinators and 148 preraks engaged for this literacy programme in the state.
For conducting the assessment test the preraks, Coordinators, panchayats Pradhans, Panchayats, Assistant Education officers (AEO), Assistant Director of Blocks and the nodal officers of the districts are mobilized.
The Mission is giving thrust to women of SC, ST, Minority and disadvantaged group.
Mr Dhakal has urged the field functionaries, learners and the general public to help eliminate illiteracy in the state. [from PRABIN KHALING]
