GANGTOK, 25 May: District level Sakewa celebration was organised at Bulbuley, Gangtok today where people from East District gathered in great numbers to celebrate this important festival of the Rai people.
Sakewa celebration is a prayer to Mother Nature for healthy crops and protection from natural calamities. Therefore, the festival is also known as “Bhumi Puja”.
A press release from Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh [AKRS] informs that the day’s celebration started with offering of puja at the three hearth stones by a Mangpa (Rai priest) and devotees. After puja the people gathered took part in group dance, Sili, and enjoyed the celebration.
Present as the chief guest of the celebration was PM Rai who has contributed to the Kirat language by developing the Rai script. He is also responsible for the introduction and development of Rai language in schools, it is mentioned.
Mr Rai in his address spoke about the significance of the Sakewa festival. IGP, Sikkim Police, Akshay Sachdeva was present as a special guest. The function was also attended by AKRS president, Dr. SK Rai, East district president, Binita Rai and others.
