GANGTOK, 26 Mar: The Gangtok Muncipal Corporation, in a
“special meeting” of all councilors chaired by Deputy mayor Shakti Singh
yesterday, unanimously passed a resolution removing KN Topgay as Mayor and also
disqualifying him as a councilor on grounds of his having defected to another
political party. Mr. Topgay, it may be recalled, had recently joined the Sikkim
Krantikari Morcha and has already begun campaigning for SKM candidates, it is
informed.
A press release issued by Mr. Singh today explains that Mr.
Topgay’s removal is on account of the anti-defection clause included last year
in the Sikkim Municipalities Act.
Ranipool Councillor Dambar Dahal moved the proposal for Mr.
Topgay’s removal and this was seconded by all GMC councilors present at the
meeting, the release adds.
