GANGTOK, 09 Oct: As suggested by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, the East District Police administration has designated, SDPO, Rangpo, DSP Linda Palmu Chettri, as the supervising officer to look after all cases relating to sexual offences or any offence against children below 18 years throughout the East District.
SCPCR has appreciated this move of the East District Police and hopes that the other three districts will also designate lady SDPOs as Supervising Officers for such offences against children in their respective districts, states an official release.
In the wake of rising number of sexual offences against children especially girls, it was felt necessary to have lady police officers as Investigating Officers to investigate cases of sexual offences of children who feel more comfortable to narrate the sexual ordeal inflicted on them to a lady police officer rather than a male police personnel.
Regarding the recent case of child molestation by a primary school teacher of Khamdong, East Sikkim, the release informs that the accused is reported to have molested other children of the school as well.
This was revealed during the counseling provided by the two Protection Officers [Child Care] under Integrated Child protection Scheme deputed by the Commission.
In this regard, the commission has lauded the efforts of Singtam Police personnel under the PI Chundi Chopel Bhutia and SI Roshan Rai in investigating and unearthing the unreported cases of sexual offences against 18 other children of the same school.
Parents of these children have also lodged an FIR in the Singtam Police Station and demanded appropriate justice and requested the law enforcing authority that sufficient punishment be given to the accused.
The Commission is constantly organizing awareness programmes on protection of child rights emphasizing on the new law ‘Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, Act 2012’ which has encouraged victims to report the crime, the release mentions. The Commission has further urged all stakeholders and members of the civil society to guard our children from such crimes and ensure their safe future. It has expressed hope that the Judicial Authority will place such cases of sexual offences against children on Fast Track Courts for speedy trial and justice for victims.
